The Tour remains in Belgium for the start of Stage 3 on Monday, a 212.5-kilometer (132-mile) leg from Verviers to Longwy, France, that passes through Luxembourg.

"The biggest problem is his knee cap which seems to be broken and because of the crash against the barrier he also has a deep cut on his leg. There is a lot of blood in there so they had to clean it out before doing the x-ray to see whether he's broken any other bones".

While Valverde was left to deal with that cruel blow, Geraint Thomas took the yellow jersey as his time of 16 minutes and four seconds proved to be enough.

"Last year I was better in the Vuelta than I was in the Tour", he said.

BMC's Stefan Kung came within five seconds of that time, with Thomas' team-mate Vasil Kiryienka seven seconds behind in third.

Ireland's Nicolas Roche was another to fall during the time trial, blaming the tram tracks for his spill as he finished in 122nd position, one minute and 14 seconds behind Thomas's time.

In the sprint, Arnaud Demare of France finished second and Andre Greipel of Germany crossed third in a banner day for Germany.

Reigning champion Chris Froome wasted no time flexing his muscles at the as he powered to sixth place in a treacherous opening time trial won superbly by his Team Sky colleague Geraint Thomas. "There was definitely a time where not so many spectators were standing next to the road".

"It's an amazing feeling". "I've had my fair share of bad luck this year".

Team manager Eusebio Unzue said the team had full confidence that Quintana could deliver his best.

"It was stressful. You kind of forget what the Tour is like", Thomas said.
