Bangladesh Can Accept 700000 Rohingya Refugees

How much does it cost to house Rohingya refugees

UN chief calls Myanmar's crackdown on Rohingya 'ethnic cleansing'

India on Thursday extended humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh by flying down food and other essential items to the neighbour to help it deal with the huge influx of Rohingyas who have fled from Myanmar.

On Monday, UN human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein described the attacks against the Rohingya as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

About 40 per cent of the total Rohingya population living in the Rakhine State of Myanmar has now fled to Bangladesh, the UN has said.

After facing criticism for her response to the Rohingya humanitarian crisis, Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi is skipping the United Nations General Assembly.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday lashed out at the Centre, accusing it of 'hypocrisy' in its refugee policy.

U.S. ambassador Nikki Haley tweeted that message Wednesday, writing, "We thank Bangladesh for hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees, fleeing violence, with nowhere to go".

He also urged the international community to provide whatever assistance they could.

"The sheer number of refugees has overwhelmed pre- existing refugee camps, with new arrivals seeking shelter anywhere they can find space", Dujarric said.

British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft added that it was the first time in nine years that the Security Council was able to agree on a common stance on Myanmar.

Critics have called for her to be stripped of her Nobel Peace Prize for failing to do more to halt the strife.

Patel said: "For the second time in a little under a year, the eyes of the world are once again fixed on Burma".

"And the Government of Myanmar has an important obligation in looking to the longer term in implementing the recommendations of the Annan Commission", he said.

Myanmar authorities have denied that the security forces, or Buddhist civilians, have been starting the fires, instead blaming the insurgents.

The current crisis erupted on August 25, when an insurgent Rohingya group attacked police outposts in Burma's Rakhine state, killing a dozen security personnel.

But Myanmar officials said Friday Murphy would not be allowed to access the northern part of Rakhine state at the center of the violence during his trip that includes a visit to the state capital, Sittwe.
